The world’s most prolific carmaker is preparing something special.

It’s not a ute, or a hybrid hatchback or even a lightweight sports car. It is a full blown supercar that has Ferrari and Lamborghini in its sights.

A billboard popped up at the famed Fuji Speedway in Japan, followed by the same image in a press release teasing the company’s reveals at the Japan Mobility Show later this month.

The image shows a new GR-badged vehicle along with close up shots of the Toyota 2000GT and the Lexus LFA, which puts the new vehicle in the same lofty company.

The image doesn’t give much away, with only a headlight and part of the grille on show.

It is believed this new supercar will be the follow-up to the LFA, likely to be called the LFR.

Spy shots of what could be the LFR have been circulating for the past year, and the concept even rocketed up the famed hill climb at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this year.

It is based on the Japanese company’s incoming GT3 race car, which was shown in concept form earlier this year.

Reports state the LFR will be powered by a hybrid 4.0-litre, twin-turbo V8 engine driving the rear wheels, with the engine alone expected to produce 530kW and total output rising to about 660kW.

The recent Lexus Sport Concept previewed the road rocket, with its low profile, long bonnet and massive air intakes showing its performance pedigree.

All the big name players are switching to plug-in hybrid power with Ferrari and Lamborghini developing monstrous outputs from their most recent petrol-electric road cars.

Toyota has also been rumoured to be developing new Celica and MR2 sports cars.

The Celica will use a turbo-petrol hybrid power to make about 300kW, according to reports.
