The VW Caddy Beach - a compact camper van the brand hoped would appeal to Australian buyers - has been axed.

The Caddy Beach compact camper van will not be sold in Australia as a 2020 model, though the rest of the Caddy range - including the commercial van and the people mover versions - will power on.

The company initially only had an allocation of 120 examples of the Caddy Beach - a drop in the water considering 66,000 camper vans and 612,000 camper trailers registered in Australia.

But it seems the demand hasn’t been high enough for the brand to roll out a 2020 VW Caddy Beach, with brand representatives confirming the model won’t be part of the 2020 Caddy model rollout.

“Not so much an axing, just a rationalisation,” said Kurt McGuiness, Volkswagen Australia PR and brand experience manager.

“I don’t think anyone could accuse the Beach of being anything other than a niche model. We brought in a few examples of it in the last model year, but it’s had its run.”

The Caddy Beach was sold at an attractive price of $46,990 drive-away, which made it the country’s most affordable complete camper.
