New VW Touareg 2020 pricing and specifications detailed: BMW X5 rival's range expands

The VW Touareg 2020 model range is split into two versions - but there are plenty of options to tailor your Touareg.

The VW Touareg 2020 model range is here, and it brings a different take to what we've seen of the current-generation model to date.

The 2020 model line-up consists of two variants, with the 190TDI listing at $79,490 plus on-road costs and the plush 190TDI Premium costing $85,490 plus on-roads.

That's not new - we knew the brand would be offering a two-tier approach for its Touareg line for the 2020 model year, but there's now detailed information on the standard specifications, not to mention the option packs available on the large luxury SUV.

First, the standard equipment for the 190TDI includes 19-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights with LED daytime running lights and LED tail-lights, steel spring suspension, leather front seats with heating and electric adjustment, keyless entry and push button start, electronic tailgate with hands-free operation, auto headlights (including auto high-beam) and auto wipers, dual-zone climate control, and a 9.2-inch touchscreen media system with sat nav, smartphone mirroring and four USB ports.

The 190TDI Premium model adds Matrix LED headlights with dynamic indicators, headlight washing system, LED tail-lights with dynamic indicators, 20-inch wheels with a space-saver spare, air suspension with electronic damping control, available no-cost two-tone leather interior trim, massaging front seats and heated/ventilated front seats.

Standard safety gear on all variants comprises auto emergency braking (AEB) that works at high and low speeds and includes pedestrian detection, lane keeping assistance, adaptive cruise control, front and rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, front and rear parking sensors, a reversing camera and driver fatigue monitoring.

Now, the option packs.

The familiar Innovision package ($8000) continues to be available for both models, bringing a 15.0-inch touchscreen media display, a 12.3-inch driver info screen, a head-up display, ambient interior lighting (30 colours), illuminated scuff plates and a black/silver gloss interior trim for the centre console.

The other option packs are solely reserved for the 190TDI Premium model.

There's the Sound & Comfort package ($8000),  which includes a surround-view camera, electric steering wheel adjustment and electric front seat adjustment with memory settings, four-zone climate control, heated rear outer seats, a 14-speaker Dynaudio stereo system, rear autonomous emergency braking, semi-autonomous parking (including acceleration, braking and gear selection), and a larger fuel tank (90 litres, up from 75L).

The $8000 R-Line package is more than just a styling kit: it includes Electromechanical Active Roll Stabilisation that stiffens the anti-rollbars in cornering to make the Touareg feel more dynamic, and R-Line models also gain rear-wheel steering, which is a first for VW and helps tighten the turning circle at speeds below 37km/h, while above that it helps tuck into corners and stabilise the car.

Also included with the R-Line pack is 20-inch wheels, R-Line bumpers, window tint, Savona leather interior with R-Line finishes, stainless steel pedals, an R-Line steering wheel with paddle-shifters, black headliner and trim elements and R-Line scuff plates.

Other optional extras include a panoramic glass roof (only available on the 190TDI Premium - $3000) and metallic paint ($2000) - and there are three new metallic colours in the Touareg range, including Malbec Red, Aquamarine (blue), and Antimonial Silver. This is in addition to the existing Deep Black Pearl Effect, Silicon Grey metallic, and Pure White.

If you're wondering what the 190TDI means, it's the power output for the 3.0-litre turbo-diesel V6 engine. The diesel mill produces 190kW of power and 600Nm of torque, and it comes with 4Motion all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission as standard.

Towing capacity for the Touareg is pegged at 750kg for an un-braked trailer and 3500kg for a braked trailer. Check out our VW Touareg towing review here.

A V8 version of the VW Touareg - with a 4.0-litre diesel V8 producing 310kW and 900Nm - is also on the cards for Australia, though it may not arrive until late in 2020.
