Will the 2025 Porsche 718 electric car hit or miss? Aussie CEO's bold call on sales of upcoming MG Cyberster rival

The new-gen 2025 718 EV will be launched in parallel with an internal combustion version

Confirmed for a "mid-decade" arrival by Porsche global CEO, Oliver Blume, the all-electric 718 sports car is closing in on the end of its development program.

Speaking at the famous German maker's annual press conference in March this year, Mr Blume said, "The 718 EV will be launched in parallel with the ICE (internal combustion) version, and in the medium run will then be exclusively available as an all-electric model."

And the CEO and Managing Director of Porsche Cars Australia, Daniel Schmollinger, believes local sales volume for a zero tailpipe emissions version of the next-generation 718 should match that of the current ICE car, recently telling CarsGuide, "It's still some time until we will launch 718 electric, but at this point in time we are absolutely planning similar numbers.

"The performance will be next level. This is clear. I saw the car already. It looks amazing, and I think I will drive it in October and this will be a next-level benchmark.

"It's the perfect set-up - small, mid-engine with that horsepower and acceleration and torque. I look forward to it. I think there's a big market for such a car," he said.

Porsche's Australian 718 sales are up substantially in 2023 with 116 Boxster registrations to the end of September representing year-on-year growth of 40 per cent and 219 Caymans a massive 124 per cent YOY sales increase.

Global chief Blume is on the record, saying, "Electromobility is given top priority at Porsche.

The all-electric 718 sports car is closing in on the end of its development program.

"It is our aspiration to deliver more than 80 per cent of our new cars to customers as all electric models in 2030," he said.

And Mr Schmollinger agrees, saying, "We want to be a pioneer in sustainable mobility. We set standards with the Taycan and that was only the beginning."

Beyond the next generation model's mid-engine/motor, rear-wheel drive layout none of the new-gen 718's technical details have leaked out of Porsche's Zuffenhausen HQ.

But it's likely to borrow elements like a 900-volt system architecture from the recently revealed Mission X Concept.
