When Datsun released the 1600 in 1969 it caused a stir.
With standard bucket seats, through-flow ventilation, ‘clap hands’ windscreen wipers, front disc brakes and a 71.5kW 1.6-litre overhead camshaft four-cylinder it was lightyears ahead of rivals.
A four-speed manual was standard and a three-speed auto came online in 1970.
The Datsun 1600’s independent rear suspension made the 1600 a rally car driver's dream, so not many unmodified examples survive today.
The line-up currently starts at $1,870 for the 1600 (base) and ranges through to $4,070 for the range-topping 1600 GL.
