Introduced in 2022, the GWM Cannon Alpha was a major step up for Chinese automaker Great Wall, who arrived in Australia back in the mid-2000s with the budget-freindly V240 ute.
The GMW Cannon is still very much on the affordable end of the Australia ute segment, though it is proof the brand has matured significantly, offering more tech, a better drivetrain and a sleeker design.
The line-up currently starts at $49,990 for the Cannon Alpha LUX (4X4) and ranges through to $62,990 for the range-topping Cannon Alpha Ultra Hybrid (4X4).

Marble White is standard plus there's a choice of optional $595 metallics comprising 'Storm Grey', 'Onyx Silver', 'Crystal Black' and 'Lunar Red'.
The entry-level Alpha Lux's standard equipment list includes 18-inch alloys with 265/60R18 tyres and a full-size steel spare, roof rails, side-steps, synthetic leather trim, LED lights and front/rear parking sensors to name a few. The premium Ultra Hybrid adds a 60/40-split tailgate with electronic lock, leather-accented trim, panoramic sunroof, electric-sliding rear window, front/rear diff-locks and much more.
Alpha styling appears to draw inspiration from full-size US pick-ups with a bold and imposing grille design and nicely balanced proportions. All model grades also share a spacious and visually-appealing interior, featuring bold woodgrain dash/door-trim inserts and a classy blend of satin chrome, piano black and full chrome highlights.
The entry-level Lux and mid-level Ultra models in the Cannon Alpha range are equipped with a 2.4-litre turbo-diesel producing 135kW/480Nm, while the premium Hybrid pairs a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine with an electric motor to produce combined outputs of 255kW/648Nm.
