Is stretching past $33,000 for a loaded MG ZS worth it? Questions remain after a week in the ZST Essence, which rubs shoulders with some impressive small SUV rivals. The 'T' at the name means this is the facelifted version of a 2017 model, and cracks are starting to show in specification, handling and presentation. Still, the MG includes plenty of active safety, a huge sunroof and lots of space.

The MG ZST is new, but not all-new. It takes the MG ZS and builds upon it with a new engine, new look and new safety tech - all of which combine to make this model more compelling than the budget model it's based upon. It's still very affordable, and is now truly competitive against some of the best sellers in the small SUV market.
