What better way to celebrate your 70th Anniversary than by restoring one of your earliest creations?

This is exactly what Land Rover is planning, they have recently come into possession of an original pre-production Land Rover that was first shown at the 1948 Amsterdam Motor show.

It's no Series 1, it's one of three Motor Show prototypes.
It's no Series 1, it's one of three Motor Show prototypes.

This prototype is one of only three built and has unique features such as thicker aluminium panel work, removable rear tub and  a galvanized chassis.

The Land Rover was last driven in the 60’s and had been living in a field in Wales before being bought for what became a failed restoration project. It was then rescued from a garden not far from where it was originally built in Solihull in the UK.

I would suspect this'll need some work...

Land Rovers team of restoration experts from the Series 1 Reborn Program (a division of the JLR Classic Works) will be in charge of the year-long rejuvination of this unique piece of Land Rover history. The plan is to preserve the weather-beaten and well-aged look.

What would you have the JLR Classic Works restore next? Tell us in the comments below.

Growing up in Tasmania, car culture hardly surrounded Joel. But between Targa, the Australian Rally Championship and V8 Supercars there was enough to build Joel’s passion for all things automotive. Joel got his first big break covering the Australian Rally Championship in the mid 2000s.  His two biggest publishing accomplishments were for two publications which are no longer in print, first one photo published in Motorsport News in the mid ‘90s and then his first feature story published in Speed magazine in the mid 2000s, both from rally events.  He now combines that automotive passion every day in his photography and writing. The best car he’s owned to date was a 2005 Subaru Impreza WRX, with the sound of the boxer engine and handling causing him to yearn for another.  If he had the money, he would buy a Dodge Viper from the early ‘90s. Did someone say 8.0-litre V10?
