Memory lane: What it's like to own an XW GTHO Phase I

I purchased my orange XW GTHO Phase I in 1971 or 1972 from a very reluctant seller.

My initial thoughts on this car back then was that it was a rocket ship in a straight line but a handful when wanting to stop, or go around a corner. A little unfair I know, but it was built to do the job of winning races which it did very well in the right hands.

Selling the GTHO was a big mistake.

The vacuum secondary carby could bring you unstuck until you understood its operation, by this I mean if you accelerated out of a corner and the secondaries opened up you had immediate oversteer! It’s a bit of a shame it did not have wider tyres but we are talking a car built in 1969.

Soon after these photos, I changed jobs and got a company car so I sold the HO. Big mistake!

Being behind the wheel of a genuine GTHO is a place most can only dream of.
