Quad-turbo Supra V12 anyone?

Ask any car guy and he’ll probably be satisfied by the 1JZ-GTE; smooth power, effortless torque, and the ability to go hard all day, every day. For some, the only problem would be that it isn’t a 2JZ engine. But hey, you know, you can’t have everything. Or can you?

Posted on a Reddit thread for his Minnesotan uncle - the builder's nephew describes the engine's creator as "an evil genius when it comes to cars" - the backyard V12 is composed of two twin-turbo Toyota Supra 1JZ-GTE straight-six engines.

Locked at an unusual 120° (for a V12 anyway) on a custom crank, the quad-cam, 48-valve engine has been targeted to create a relatively mild circa-600kw (800hp). I said relatively.

No, this isn't going to fit in your Honda.

Though if the internet is to be believed, and it always is, he should easily be able to tune it to 4000hp with an eBay exhaust, smoke nitrous Mustangs, and fly off into space.

Nowadays however, the quad-turbo setup is gone and has been replaced by a simpler system that utilises a pair of Garrett GTX 3076 turbochargers. While the engine hasn’t been started, yet, the V12 has been installed in another backyard project; a lightweight single-seat racer, presumably for time travel.

What do you think of the 1JZ V12 project? Do you think it's a project gone too far or just plain epic? Tell us what you think in the comments below.

James Lisle (aka J3) likes all things cars. Cynical and enthusiastic in equal measure, James loves to clamber into anything with a steering wheel and a decent amount of grunt. Although it may seem the J3 glass is half empty on first acquaintance with a new ride, he maintains a balanced approach and will happily lose himself in technical details relating to even the most common, mass market models. Bore and stroke ratios, specific output stats, and thermal efficiency figures are his guilty pleasures.
