First it was Audi with its Gran Turismo concept, now its VW's turn to ace the electric car game.

Called the I.D. R Pikes Peak, it will be unveiled online Monday morning (Australian time) in a live stream direct from the Pôle Mécanique race track in Alés, France.

VW’s aim for the I.D. R? To take out the Pikes Peak electric car record.

The massive rear wing is a Pikes Peak signature.

The electric car record is actually split into two different categories: The modified record - currently held by Rhys Millen in a eO PP100 at 8:57.118 - and, the production record - currently held by Blake Fuller in a 2016 Tesla Model S P90D at 11:48.264.

The man behind the wheel will be French racer Romain Dumas, who will take the I.D. R to the famous hill climb on June 24th this year. Dumas is already a three-time Pikes Peak winner, he won the event in 2014, 2016 and 2017. He is also a two-time winner at the LeMans 24hr.

The I.D. R will also showcase VWs upcoming 'MEB' electric car platform that will underpin all I.D. electric vehicles.

Volkswagen will live-stream the unveiling event for the I.D. R here.

Do you like the look of VWs I.D. R, or do you reckon the Audi's e-tron Vision GT concept was better? Tell us in the comments.

Growing up in Tasmania, car culture hardly surrounded Joel. But between Targa, the Australian Rally Championship and V8 Supercars there was enough to build Joel’s passion for all things automotive. Joel got his first big break covering the Australian Rally Championship in the mid 2000s.  His two biggest publishing accomplishments were for two publications which are no longer in print, first one photo published in Motorsport News in the mid ‘90s and then his first feature story published in Speed magazine in the mid 2000s, both from rally events.  He now combines that automotive passion every day in his photography and writing. The best car he’s owned to date was a 2005 Subaru Impreza WRX, with the sound of the boxer engine and handling causing him to yearn for another.  If he had the money, he would buy a Dodge Viper from the early ‘90s. Did someone say 8.0-litre V10?
