Initially designed as a Volvo concept car, the Polestar 2 arrived in 2020 as an elevated EV iteration that provides a tempting alternative to the Tesla Model 3. Its regular updates and fine-tuning means it is consistently evolving to keep up with the competition. It is also the first car with Google’s Android Automotive operating system in-built, providing a simple and functional infotainment experience.
The line-up currently starts at $45,870 for the 2 STD Range Single Motor 69KWH and ranges through to $65,010 for the range-topping 2 Long Range Dual Motor 78KWH.
The Polestar 2 has an understated Scandinavian design with clean lines in the dashboard and an uncluttered centre console. There is an overwhelming sense of the Polestar 2 being of a high-quality build. There are no squeaks or rattles, joinery is flush and the doors close with a soft thump.
The dashboard is headlined by a portrait-orientated 11.2-inch touchscreen multimedia system and a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel. A panoramic sunroof is an optional extra.
There are six colour options to choose from, 'Magnesium’, ‘Snow’, ‘Thunder’, ‘Jupiter’, ‘Midnight’ and ‘Space’.
Only 'Magnesium' comes as an included colour, all others cost extra.
The Standard range Single motor has a driving range of up to 546km (WLTP).
The Long range Single motor has a driving range of up to 655km (WLTP).
The Long range Single motor has a driving range of up to 593km (WLTP).
The Long range Single motor has a driving range of up to 568km (WLTP).
There are three different ways to charge your Polestar two – two at home and one in public. The first involves a regular 240V wall socket, using a standard charging cable provided by Polestar. This will take roughly 34 hours at home for the 69kWh battery or 41 hours for the long-range 82kWh battery. Charging costs range between 21 to 36 cents per kWh on average but can vary depending on demand and which state you live in. Alternatively, owners can purchase an AC wall unit which on average costs between $800 to $2000, with additional charges for installation. An 11kW unit will fully charge a Polestar 2 with a 69kWh battery in seven hours, while the 82kWh unit will take eight hours. If the unit is hooked up to solar power, the cost can be free. Polestar owners can also access public DC fast-charging stations with the maximum output of 200kW. It will take 40 minutes to charge the 69kWh battery at this rate and 32 minutes on the 82kWh unit. Once again, charges depending on demand and where you’re charging, but as a general rule you should never pay more than $40 per charge.
