Subaru Liberty water pump

It's common practice to replace the water pump at the belt change, and not just on Subarus, as the water pump is usually found to be leaking when they take off the front cover and belt etc. By replacing it when the engine is pulled down for the belt change you won't have to do it again when the water pump finally fails. If you're not sure ask to see evidence the water pump needs replacing before the mechanic goes ahead and fits a new one. $400 is about right if it has to be replaced.

Six of the best

I'D GO for the later model with the lower kilometres. Five years from now the Liberty will be 10 years old and probably have 125,000km on it, but the Mazda will be six years old with about 110,000km on its odometer. The Mazda will look much more attractive to buyers.

Not at liberty

WE PUT your questions to Subaru's technical people, who gave this response: ``This is a normal characteristic. It is of a minor nature and we have had only a handful of comments from owners of the thousands of this model that we have sold. The current model has enhancements to ensure only minor sensation of the opening and closing of the throttle when cruise control operates to maintain the set speed, particularly on downhill roads.'' Though the company claims to have had few complaints, it has moved to improve the cruise control on the current model, which should tell you they thought it wasn't up to scratch. Unfortunately, it seems you'll have to put up with it or get the newer model.
