Toyota RAV4 Gearbox & Transmission Problems

Are you having problems with the transmission of your Toyota RAV4? Let our team of motoring experts keep you up to date with all of the latest Toyota RAV4 transmission issues & faults. We have answered all of the most frequently asked questions relating to problems with the Toyota RAV4 transmission.

Toyota RAV4 2003: Automatic gearbox problems?

It's a problem with the engine/gearbox management computer and affected cars all over the world. We understand that Toyota redesigned the ECM to fix the problem, so go to a Toyota dealer and ask about a new ECM that has the fix. Don't replace it with another ECM of the same sort that it is currently in your car, that won't fix the problem.

Toyota RAV4 2005: What are signs of the ECM problem?

There is a problem with the ECM controlling the automatic transmission that car result in the clutches in the transmission burning out. It was so common that Toyota recalled RAV4s in America to fix them, but Toyota chose not to recall the cars in Australia. Seems we're second-class citizens. Watch for rough shifting, reluctance to shift, jerking and generally rough running.

Toyota RAV4 2006: Symptoms of a transmission problem?

It certainly sounds like the same problem. Consult your dealer about it and ask what Toyota is prepared to do for you. We understand that Toyota was replacing the transmission ECM for owners with problem cars in the USA, but they have not been as forthcoming here. It would also be worth having it assessed by an independent auto transmission specialist so you know exactly what you're dealing with.

Toyota RAV4 2011: Is the V6 suitable for towing?

The RAV4 V6 is rated to tow 1900 kg with trailer brakes or 750 kg without brakes, so your caravan should have brakes if you want to tow it with the RAV4. You need to be conscious of the total weight of the van, not just the tare weight, but if the tare weight is just 800 kg as you say, the total weight is probably going to be within the total weight the RAV4 will haul. I wouldn’t fit an extra cooler for the trip you plan to make.

Toyota RAV4 1999: Won't stay in fifth gear

This is a known problem with the RAV4 and we're told Toyota has an upgrade kit available to fix it. Contact your dealer and ask them to upgrade your car.

Toyota RAV4 2003: Cost of repair after transmission failure?

I think you would have a good case to argue that Toyota should come to the party with at least part of the repair costs. A transmission failure at such low kays is really unacceptable, particularly given the advice that it was caused by a faulty ECM, a problem Toyota knows about.

Toyota RAV4 2001: Auto slipping when changing gears

It sounds like the auto trans needs servicing. If you have a regular mechanic you trust have him test drive it for you for an assessment, but I reckon you need to take it to an auto trans mechanic.

Toyota RAV4 2000: Clutch replacement?

THE kilometres seem about right for a clutch replacement, so I wouldn't be concerned about that, but the time needed to replace it seems a little high. Your Toyota dealer will be able to show you the time Toyota allows for a clutch change, which should calm your concerns. My trade contacts suggest 12 hours is needed to replace a clutch, so be prepared for a bill of about $850 just for labour.
