Cupra is a performance brand, and the Leon VZx is its hero hot hatch.

The facelifted 2026 model gets a new look but features the same core attributes as before, including a turbocharged engine and dynamically capable chassis.

The Leon VXz is priced from $64,990 (plus on-road costs) and includes 19-inch black and copper alloy wheels, multi-link rear suspension, adaptive dampers, front locking differential, upgraded brakes, quad exhaust and Cupra drive modes. There’s also leather-appointed seats and a 12-speaker Sennheiser sound system.

The Leon VZx gets a potent 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine that makes 221kW/400Nm, to put it right at the heart of the hot hatch market. However, despite this performance, it misses out on the all-wheel-drive system found in the similar Volkswagen Golf R and Audi S3.

Being a hot hatch, the VZx is the thirstiest member of the Leon range, using 7.6L/100km. With its 50-litre tank it has a theoretical driving range of approximately 650km.

Like all Cupra models, the Leon VZx is covered by a five-year/unlimited kilometre warranty. Servicing is required every 12 months/15,000km, whichever comes first, and Cupra is offering a servicing pack special until the end of 2025, of $1990 for five years.

Steve has been obsessed with all things automotive for as long as he can remember. Literally, his earliest memory is of a car. Having amassed an enviable Hot Wheels and Matchbox collection as a kid he moved into the world of real cars with an Alfa Romeo Alfasud. Despite that questionable history he carved a successful career for himself, firstly covering motorsport for Auto Action magazine before eventually moving into the automotive publishing world with CarsGuide in 2008. Since then he's worked for every major outlet, having work published in The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, Drive.com.au, Street Machine, V8X and F1 Racing. These days he still loves cars as much as he did as a kid and has an Alfa Romeo Alfasud in the garage (but not the same one as before... that's a long story).
