The XC60 proves that comfort and safety still appear to be at the top of the priority list for Volvo but style is being retuned to make this medium-sized SUV a true competitor against its luxury rivals, the BMW X3, Audi Q5 and Lexus NX. The question is, has it been successful?

The mid-size luxury SUV segment is the most conjested when it comes to plug-in hybrids, so how does Volvo's XC60 set itself apart?

The 2022 Volvo XC60 range has arrived in Australia, with the mainstream models adopting mild-hybrid technology under the bonnet, while inside the car there's a new Google infotainment system. Are the changes all good? Or is there room for improvement with this rival to the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Mercedes GLC?

To quote Ben Stiller in Zoolander, this car is really, really good looking.This is the first Volvo I’ve test driven and I was pleasantly surprised by all it had to offer. I was in the Volvo XC60 T8 Polestar which is at the top of the range with a hybrid engine, so it immediately feels modern and ahead of the competition which doesn't offer electric/hybrid models. It costs $99,990 before extras and on road costs and competes with cars like the Audi SQ5 and BMW X3. Here’s how it did with my family for this week’s family review. 

The Inscription grade sits in the middle of the Volvo XC60 range.

The Momentum is the entry grade in the Volvo XC60 range, with the D4 diesel variant listing for $59,990 and its T5 petrol sibling for $62,990. Standard features include a 9.0-inch vertical touchscreen and a 12.3-inch driver display, sat nav (gps navigation system), 360 parking camera, auto parking system, 10-speaker

The R-Design trim level is the highest grade in the XC60 line-up and it’s available over three engine variants.

If this was 10 years ago I’d be making jokes about Volvo drivers, IKEA and ABBA, but those those stereotypes are all irrelevant now.

Anybody who has ever towed a caravan or anything else knows nothing quite beats diesel pulling power and the fuel saving advantages that go with it. But this XC60 D5 is way more than just a tow car.

The top of the Volvo XC60 range is a plug-in hybrid – not a token variant, not a half-hearted attempt to be seen to be doing the right thing. Nope, the top-grade XC60 is the twin engine, R-Design T8.
