Why 2022 was the real beginning for Genesis: Record sales and electric push cement new luxury car brand in Australia

This year is critical for Genesis to cement its place as a long-term member of the Australian car market.

Genesis sold just 1039 cars in 2022 but was one of the biggest winners in a challenging year for the luxury car market in Australia.

While Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Lexus and others suffered declining sales as they struggled with a variety of issues, not least of which was the ongoing global supply chain crisis, Genesis continued its year-on-year growth.

Obviously slightly more than 1000 sales isn't notable in itself - Mercedes-Benz sold more examples of the CLA than Genesis did in total - but in context 2022 was a big step forward for Hyundai's luxury operation.

For starters, Genesis out-sold the far more-established Jaguar (700 sales) and Alfa Romeo (571). More importantly though, Genesis sales were up more than 40 per cent compared to 2021 on the back of the GV60, GV70 and GV80 SUVs.

While the brand doesn't have any confirmed new models arriving in 2023, this year is critical for Genesis to cement its place as a long-term member of the Australian car market in order not to suffer the same fate as Nissan's short-lived luxury brand, Infiniti.

There is even better supply of the GV70 and G80 Electrified, with reportedly less than three months wait for a specific order.

A facelift for the G70 sedan is expected, but more pertinently the brand will have its three electric models - GV60, G80 Electfied and GV70 Electrified - on sale for a full year for the first time.

The GV60, which is based on the same underpinnings as the in-demand Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6, is in greater supply than either of those two. And while Hyundai releases the Ioniq 5 in batches, the GV60 is available for direct order, to provide more personalisation and has a wait time of less than six months.

A facelifted GV80 is rumoured to arrive in 2024.

Crucially there are more models coming down the pipeline, with a facelifted GV80 rumoured to arrive in 2024 and will bring with it a new ‘coupe' version to take on the likes of the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe and BMW X6.

There remains speculation that Genesis will also introduce an all-electric sports coupe in the  near-future. The brand has teased multiple versions of a potential hero model with both the Speedium and Genexis X concepts.

A new concept car is also expected to be revealed at this year's New York motor show in April, although there are no details on what form that will take. But Genesis has used the New York showcase to preview several key models in the past, most notably the GV80.

Steve has been obsessed with all things automotive for as long as he can remember. Literally, his earliest memory is of a car. Having amassed an enviable Hot Wheels and Matchbox collection as a kid he moved into the world of real cars with an Alfa Romeo Alfasud. Despite that questionable history he carved a successful career for himself, firstly covering motorsport for Auto Action magazine before eventually moving into the automotive publishing world with CarsGuide in 2008. Since then he's worked for every major outlet, having work published in The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, Drive.com.au, Street Machine, V8X and F1 Racing. These days he still loves cars as much as he did as a kid and has an Alfa Romeo Alfasud in the garage (but not the same one as before... that's a long story).
