Great Wall Cannon 2021 review: snapshot

EXPERT RATING

The Great Wall Cannon is the base model in the 2021 GWM Ute range. If that naming seems confusing, GWM is the new brand name, Ute is the model, and Cannon is the base variant. But because we know people think of this ute as being sold by Great Wall, we’ve included that too.

The Great Wall Cannon is the base model in the 2021 GWM Ute range. If that naming seems confusing, GWM is the new brand name, Ute is the model, and Cannon is the base variant. But because we know people think of this ute as being sold by Great Wall, we’ve included that too.

The entry-level model is super competitively priced, at $33,990 drive-away. That’s for an on-demand 4x4 dual-cab pick-up with a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine (with 120kW/400Nm), and an eight-speed automatic transmission. Claimed fuel use is 9.4L/100km.

Payload capacity is 1050kg, while the towing capacity is 750kg for an unbraked trailer and 3000kg for a braked trailer.

Standard equipment for the base model Cannon ute is exceptional, with LED headlights with LED DRLs and active fog lamps, LED tail-lights, 18-inch alloy wheels, body-coloured bumpers, side steps, powered mirrors, keyless entry, push-button start, and a shark-fin antenna all standard.

The five-seat cabin has ‘Eco Leather' seats, manual air-conditioning, carpet flooring, and a polyurethane steering wheel with paddle shifters for the automatic gearbox.

Media is by way of a 9.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the stereo has four speakers as well as AM/FM radio. There’s a 3.5-inch driver info screen with a digital speedometer and trip computer.

The base model Cannon also has a USB power outlet for a dash camera, three USB ports and a 12-volt power outlet in the rear, and rear seat directional air vents as well.

The safety story is strong, with an array of tech previously unseen in the world of Great Wall utes. There’s auto emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian and cyclist detection, road sign recognition, lane keeping assistance, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and seven airbags including a front centre airbag - this is stuff we’re only seeing in the likes of the Mazda BT-50 and Isuzu D-Max.
