The cheapest Mini Countryman ain't quite so cheap anymore, with price increases across the board and the axing of the manual transmission lifting the cost of entry to $39,900.

But you do now get a whole heap of stuff that was missing on the outgoing car, including a reversing camera, front and rear parking sensors and an auto-parking system. You can also expect 18-inch alloys, leather-trimmed seats and a powered boot you can open by waving your foot under the rear bumper.

Power arrives courtesy of a clever three-cylinder, 1.5-litre petrol engine good for 100kW at 4,400rpm and 220Nm from 1,400rpm, which is channeled through a six-speed automatic transmission.

You'll also now get Mini's Driver Assistant Package, which includes forward collision warning with pedestrian detection and AEB, and a street-sign recognition system that reads the signs as you pass them and displays that info on the in-car screen.
