I was driving on a bush track, nothing rough just sightseeing with my 2015 Ford Ranger, in second gear, high-range four-wheel drive, and hardly doing 30 km/h. I put my foot down to get over another erosion mound and then had nothing, no drive, no gears, no change to 2h, nothing. Pulled up and ended up being towed home. On inspection, red transmission oil was dripping very slowly off the bash plate. No evidence of damage or impact too the bash plates. Any idea, as no problem beforehand, and I am experienced 4WD enthusiast. What do you think?
It would seem the transmission has somehow been damaged. Get under and have a look to see where the leak is coming from, and hopefully you will see damage that is causing the leak. If it’s a very slow leak as you say it could be that it’s been leaking for a while until the fluid level dropped to the point it couldn't maintain drive any longer.
