2022 Volvo XC60 price and features: Facelifted BMW X3, Audi Q5, Mercedes-Benz GLC and Lexus NX rival arrives with mild-hybrid power

The current XC60 has been given a midlife facelift.

Volvo Australia has released the facelifted version of the second-generation XC60 mid-size SUV, which ushers in an all-hybrid powertrain line-up for MY22 and beyond.

As reported, the XC60 is no longer available with a diesel engine option, while its two non-electrified petrol units now feature a 48V mild-hybrid system, which has a Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) that provides an initial electric boost via an integrated starter generator (ISG).

The T5 and T6 petrol engine options are now known as B5 and B6 respectively, with the former available in entry-level Momentum ($68,540, +$3550) and mid-range Inscription ($75,889, +$3899) grades, while the latter is only offered as a flagship R-Design ($81,888, +$2898) variant.

The turbocharged B5 and turbocharged/supercharged B6 versions are, of course, motivated by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, which now produces 183kW/350Nm and 220kW/420Nm respectively. Either way, an eight-speed torque-converter automatic transmission is in tow alongside an all-wheel-drive system.

Once again, the XC60’s range-topper is the $100,960 (+$970) T8 Polestar Engineered (aka Recharge Plug-in Hybrid), which adds an electric motor to the B6’s unit to deliver combined outputs of 311kW/670Nm. It’s worth noting, though, its facelift isn’t here just yet, so stay tuned.

That said, standard equipment in the B5 Momentum includes adaptive LED headlights, 19-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry, a power-operated tailgate, push-button start, a 9.0-inch central touchscreen, satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, digital radio, a 12.0-inch digital instrument cluster, four-zone climate control, power-adjustable front seats and leather-accented upholstery.

Advanced driver-assist systems extend to autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep and steering assist, adaptive cruise control (with stop and go functionality), traffic sign recognition, active blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, surround-view cameras, front and rear parking sensors, and tyre pressure monitoring.

The B5 Inscription adds 20-inch alloy wheels, a head-up display, heated front seats, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, an Orreford crystal gear selector and Driftwood interior trim.

Meanwhile, the B6 R-Design also gets a body kit, 21-inch alloy wheels, gloss-black exterior trim, front sports seats, Nappa leather-accented upholstery, a Charcoal headliner, Metal Mesh interior trim and metal pedals.

As reported, the BMW X3, Audi Q5, Mercedes-Benz GLC and Lexus NX rival’s update further brings tweaked bumpers, new alloy wheel designs, a fresh Android Automotive-based multimedia system and a debuting wireless smartphone charger.

Justin’s dad chose to miss his birth because he wanted to watch Peter Brock hopefully win Bathurst, so it figures Justin grew up to have a car obsession, too – and don’t worry, his dad did turn up in time after some stern words from his mum. That said, despite loving cars and writing, Justin chose to pursue career paths that didn’t lend themselves to automotive journalism, before eventually ending up working as a computer technician. But that car itch just couldn’t be scratched by his chipped Volkswagen Golf R (Mk7), so he finally decided to give into the inevitable and study a Master of Journalism at the same time. And even with the long odds, Justin was lucky enough to land a full-time job as a motoring journalist soon after graduating and the rest, as they say, is history. These days, Justin happily finds himself working at CarsGuide during the biggest period of change yet for the automotive industry, which is perhaps the most exciting part of all. In case you’re wondering, Justin begrudgingly sold the Golf R (sans chip) and still has plans to buy his dream car, an E46 BMW M3 coupe (manual, of course), but he is in desperate need of a second car space – or maybe a third.
