2023 Mazda 2 pricing and features: Updated light hatch and sedan range gets fresh look to battle MG3, Kia Rio

The new face for the Mazda 2 comes from the brand’s ‘evolved Kodo design language’.

Mazda Australia has updated its smallest car, the Mazda2, for 2023 with a new external design to bring it in line with some of the brand’s newer models.

First launched in 2014, the current generation Mazda2 has been updated once since with a facelift in 2019, making this the second time the Mazda small hatch has been refreshed.

The third-most popular car in its segment behind the MG3 and the soon-defunct Suzuki Baleno, the refreshed Mazda2 will go on sale in June this year, with customer cars to be delivered from July.

The model grades remain as they were before, with the hatch offered in Pure, Pure SP, Evolve and GT, while the sedan is available in Pure and GT.

Pricing for the updated light car starts from $22,290 before on-road costs, which is a $780 increase on the pre-facelift Pure manual. Hatch pricing tops out at $27,490 for the GT auto, while pricing for the two sedan grades match their hatch siblings. All grades are up in price between $680 and $1080.

Primarily a design facelift, the Mazda2 will now feature more of the brand’s evolved Kodo design language, as well as black or body coloured grilles, colour accents, and new grey or blue metallic colour options.

The Mazda2 will also now have “an asymmetrically placed colour accent” found on the front grille and on the rear bumper, both of which have been redesigned, which Mazda says aims to “enhance the car’s youthful spirit”.

The most affordable grades, Pure and Pure SP, feature coloured dash trim in white, black, or mint, determined by the car’s exterior colour. The Pure SP gains a black film roof covering.

The Mazda2 Evolve and the range-topping GT variant both feature black interior designs with red highlights, focused on the seat stitching and air vent surrounds.

The GT also gains seats partially trimmed in leather, a red and black dash, as well as a new wheel design and a dual-exit polished exhaust tip.
