2024 Porsche Macan electric car design details confirmed in official sketch as the sports car brand takes the fight to the Polestar 4, Tesla Model Y, and Genesis GV60 EVs

The Porsche Macan is perhaps the brand's most important model as the best-seller debuts a new electric platform.

Porsche has shown off the design of its upcoming electric Macan, ahead of its reveal in Singapore later this week.

The design sketches confirm many of the speculated details of the new SUV and ones seen from spy imagery, including the Taycan-style headlight fittings with quad DRLs. Overall, the car sticks to the original Macan’s shape and design queues whilst updating it for the electric era.

The new Macan will not only be the first fully electric Porsche SUV, but it will also debut the Volkswagen Group’s next-generation PPE architecture to be used on higher-end and sportier models, particularly for the Audi and Porsche brands. PPE will sit above the existing MEB platform which underpins existing VW Group EVs like the ID.4.

Thanks to its new platform, the next-gen Macan will have an 800-volt electric architecture and a large 100kWh battery, with the brand saying all variants will have more than 500km of cruising range. The drag coefficient has been reduced from 0.35 on the current car to just 0.25, helping to extend range, and the new SUV will also have Porsche’s next-gen electric motor for “more than 450kW” of power and up to 1000Nm of torque. All new Macans will be dual-motor, all-wheel drive, with a rear-bias.

Thanks to its 800-volt system, the new SUV can also charge at a rate of 270kW, allowing a fast-charging time of 10 to 80 per cent in a claimed 22 minutes. The maximum AC charging rate, meanwhile, is 11kW.

Other new features on the electric Macan include active aerodynamic elements, including an automatically extending rear spoiler, cooling flaps on the intakes, and variable elements on the underbody. It will also feature an active suspension management system and rear-axle steering.

Porsche has shown off the design of its upcoming electric Macan.

The brand says prototypes of the new model have been tested over three and a half million kilometres, in temperature extremes from 50 degrees celsius in Death Valley in California to minus 30 in Scandanavia. To fulfil its role as an SUV, the new model has also been tested on gravel, snow, and ice.

Porsche Vice President of Style, Michael Mauer, explained that the new Macan "is the first model that we are electrifying from an existing product identity.

“Every new sports car has to be very clearly recognisable as part of the Porsche product family and the model in question, but also has to be perceived as the new one.”

Other considerations in the overall design included how to best utilise the lack of an engine, as well as preserving the identity of the model whilst moving it forward.

The Macan is perhaps Porsche’s most important single model, accounting for around 50 per cent of the brand’s sales in 2023. If you still want one with a combustion engine, don’t fear. The old Macan will continue to be sold alongside the new electric one for a short period of time, even in Australia, but the brand’s local Managing Director, Daniel Schmollinger, confirmed there would be a time where the nameplate goes electric-only.

The new Macan will enter an increasingly heated premium SUV space, competing against rivals like the Genesis GV60, Polestar 4, and the incoming updated Tesla Model Y Performance, which is yet to be revealed.
