Back in black! 2022 Renault Koleos price and features: New Black Edition joins Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5, Mitsubishi Outlander and Subaru Forester rival's range

The Black Edition is the latest member of the Koleos family.

Renault Australia has expanded its mid-size SUV range, as the Koleos is now available in limited Black Edition guise, with 400 examples up for grabs.

Priced from $40,090 plus on-road costs, the Black Edition commands a $2700 premium over the mid-range Zen variant it’s based upon, although buyers are compensated for their extra spend with a longer list of standard equipment.

Specifically, the Black Edition adds dark-grey 19-inch alloy wheels, gloss-black side mirror covers and roof rails, side steps, ‘Limited’ badging, French flags on the B-pillars, and a hands-free power tailgate as well as Black, Grey or Universal White metallic paintwork.

Inside, the Black Edition stands out from the crowd with a portrait 8.7-inch touchscreen multimedia system, black artificial-leather upholstery, yellow stitching, matte carbon-look trim and ‘Limited’ scuff plates.

That said, Zen buyers can now also gets the hands-free power tailgate and portrait 8.7-inch touchscreen multimedia system by optioning the new $2000 Easy Life Package.

Just like every other version of the Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5, Mitsubishi Outlander and Subaru Forester rival, the Black Edition is motivated by a 126kW/226Nm 2.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol four-cylinder engine.

A continuously variable transmission (CVT) is also shared range-wide, while the Black Edition follows the Zen’s lead by only being available in front-wheel-drive form.

As reported, the Koleos’ entry-level Life, Zen and the Intens grades became $600 more expensive (see full pricing table below) on March 1 “due to significant material and shipping cost changes over recent months”, according to Renault Australia.

Justin’s dad chose to miss his birth because he wanted to watch Peter Brock hopefully win Bathurst, so it figures Justin grew up to have a car obsession, too – and don’t worry, his dad did turn up in time after some stern words from his mum. That said, despite loving cars and writing, Justin chose to pursue career paths that didn’t lend themselves to automotive journalism, before eventually ending up working as a computer technician. But that car itch just couldn’t be scratched by his chipped Volkswagen Golf R (Mk7), so he finally decided to give into the inevitable and study a Master of Journalism at the same time. And even with the long odds, Justin was lucky enough to land a full-time job as a motoring journalist soon after graduating and the rest, as they say, is history. These days, Justin happily finds himself working at CarsGuide during the biggest period of change yet for the automotive industry, which is perhaps the most exciting part of all. In case you’re wondering, Justin begrudgingly sold the Golf R (sans chip) and still has plans to buy his dream car, an E46 BMW M3 coupe (manual, of course), but he is in desperate need of a second car space – or maybe a third.
