BMW 8 Series Coupe 2018 revealed

The BMW 8 Series will initally be available with either a 4.4-litre V8 petrol engine or a 3.0-litre diesel six.

BMW has lifted the lid on its all-new 8 Series Coupe, confirming two variants for the European market, the M850i and 840d.

Both models will be offered overseas from November, although it has yet to be confirmed if the grand-tourer will indeed make it Down Under.

Both engine offerings are mated to an eight-speed 'Steptronic' transmission and BMW's 'xDrive' all-wheel drive system.

The BMW M-fettled M850i, which will sit atop the launch range, is motivated by a 4.4-litre V8 petrol engine that develops 390kW from 5500 – 6000rpm and 750Nm between 1800 – 4600rpm.

Meanwhile, the 840d xDrive features a 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line diesel engine, producing a claimed 235kW at 4400rpm and 680Nm from 1750 – 2250rpm.

Performance figures are strong in either case, with the V8-powered M850i sprinting from 0-100km/h in 3.7 seconds, while the 840d makes the run in 4.9s.

The Coupe is proportionally low at 1341mm, with a long-bonnet, wide hips and distinctive double-bubble roof bulges.

Both engine offerings are mated to an eight-speed 'Steptronic' transmission and BMW's 'xDrive' all-wheel drive system.

Developed in parallel with the brand's M8 GTE endurance racecar, the 8 Series Coupe is constructed with lightweight materials including aluminum, magnesium and carbon-fibre, sitting on what BMW calls an "extremely stiff" body and suspension structure.

Specifically, the car features 'Adaptive M' suspension, 'Integral Active Steering' and a staggered wheel configuration for improved handling.

In terms of styling, the 8 Series has an aggressive stance with muscle-car-esque design cues. The Coupe is proportionally low at 1341mm, with a long-bonnet, wide hips and distinctive double-bubble roof bulges.

Inside, BMW has taken a fairly minimalist approach.

Bespoke Adaptive LED headlights can be equipped up front with BMW's 'Laserlight' and 'Selective Beam' technology.

Inside, BMW has taken a fairly minimalist approach with low-mounted 'Vernasca' leather sports seats and an angular dash design with chrome-style touches throughout.

A 12.3-inch digital instrument clisters works in conjunction with a 10.25-inch infotainment system, a head-up display.

Driving modes include 'Adaptive', 'Comfort', 'ECO Pro', 'Sport' and 'Sport+'.

Both engine offerings are mated to an eight-speed 'Steptronic' transmission and BMW's 'xDrive' all-wheel drive system.

A wide range of standard safety technologies are equipped as standard, including adaptive cruise control with stop/go, lane-keep assist, lane change warning, lane departure warning, side collision protection, evasion aid, cross-traffic warning, priority warning and wrong-way warning.

While BMW Australia has yet to provide information on local availability, it is expected that the V8-powered M850i xDrive will on the cards.
