The BMW X2 range has seen the addition of a new flagship model for 2019, with the X2 M35i sitting atop the German maker’s compact crossover line-up.

The new all-wheel-drive X2 M35i model has a list price of $68,900 (plus on-road costs), making it the most expensive, but also the most performance-oriented, X2 yet.

It comes powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine with a bolshy 225kW of power and 450Nm of torque - enough to get it from 0-100km/h in just 4.9 seconds. The X2 M35i has an eight-speed automatic transmission with all-wheel drive, and there’s a mechanical limited-slip diff at the front end to reduce torque steer.

The performance stuff doesn’t end there - it has M Sport brakes with blue calipers, 20-inch alloy wheels and there’s a sports exhaust system that “commands on-road presence and exudes power”.

Separating this model visually is an M aerodynamics pack with high-gloss black details plus Cerium Grey body trim components.

Inside, there are M35i door sill finishers, M Sport heated front seats with electric adjustment (including lumbar adjustment) and Dakota perforated leather seat trim, anthracite roof liner, a 12-speaker harman/kardon sound system and “Aluminium Hexagon” interior trim.

The M35i also comes with an 8.8-inch media screen with sat nav and Apple CarPlay, a head-up display, front and rear parking sensors, a reversing camera, dual-zone climate control, LED headlights, cruise control and more.

For those who want a little more, the Enhance Package for the X2 M35i adds metallic paintwork, a panoramic glass roof and wireless phone charging for an additional $2900.

The new model sits atop the BMW X2 line-up, which is now four-strong, starting with the entry-level front-wheel drive X2 sDrive18i, as well as the more powerful petrol front-drive sDrive20i and the sole diesel version, the xDrive20d AWD. Specs go unchanged for these models.
