New Audi Q2 2021 detailed: Mercedes-Benz GLA and BMW X1 rival gets aggressive facelift

The Q2 now has a sharper look.

Audi has revealed the facelifted version of the first-generation Q2 small SUV, which is due in Australian showrooms in mid-2021.

Up front, the Q2’s Singleframe grille is now lower, drawing it closer to the redesigned bumper and creating space for a narrow slit at the bonnet’s edge, while the headlights either side are now exclusively available in LED and Matrix LED varieties.

At the rear, another redesigned bumper features, while the LED tail-lights come with traditional or sequential indicator lights. There are also fresh sets of alloy wheels to choose from.

Five new paintwork options are available, with Apple Green new to Audi, while Manhattan Grey, Navarra Blue, Arrow Grey and Turbo Blue are available with the Q2 for the first time.

Inside, the Q2’s gear selector and air vents have been redesigned, while LED ambient lighting now extends to the dashboard and knee rests’ trim inserts, which are backlit. Of note, Alcantara has been replaced by Dinamica microfibre as an upholstery option.

A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster is still on hand but is now complemented by an 8.3-inch multimedia system (up from 7.0-inch), which doesn’t follow Audi’s move to touchscreens and instead uses a rotary controller. It also now supports live traffic data.

The Q2’s suite of advanced driver-assist systems now extends to adaptive cruise control with steering assist and stop and go functionality. Basically, it enables self-driving on highways and even automatically changes speed based on traffic sign recognition.

Five engines are available in the Q2, but only the 110kW/250Nm 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol unit with cylinder deactivation has been confirmed thus far. Audi promises more petrol and diesel options will be introduced later on.

According to Audi Australia, local pricing and specification details will be released closer to the facelifted Mercedes-Benz GLA and BMW X1 rival’s launch. For reference, the Q2 is currently priced from $41,950 to $52,400 plus on-road costs.

Justin’s dad chose to miss his birth because he wanted to watch Peter Brock hopefully win Bathurst, so it figures Justin grew up to have a car obsession, too – and don’t worry, his dad did turn up in time after some stern words from his mum. That said, despite loving cars and writing, Justin chose to pursue career paths that didn’t lend themselves to automotive journalism, before eventually ending up working as a computer technician. But that car itch just couldn’t be scratched by his chipped Volkswagen Golf R (Mk7), so he finally decided to give into the inevitable and study a Master of Journalism at the same time. And even with the long odds, Justin was lucky enough to land a full-time job as a motoring journalist soon after graduating and the rest, as they say, is history. These days, Justin happily finds himself working at CarsGuide during the biggest period of change yet for the automotive industry, which is perhaps the most exciting part of all. In case you’re wondering, Justin begrudgingly sold the Golf R (sans chip) and still has plans to buy his dream car, an E46 BMW M3 coupe (manual, of course), but he is in desperate need of a second car space – or maybe a third.
