Nissan has confirmed that it can deliver several of its most popular models to buyers within a few weeks, while even the highly-anticipated Y62 Patrol Warrior could be in customer hands before Christmas – but only if they are ordered now.
With supply freeing up generally and production of the off-road focused full-sized 4WD SUV Warrior in particular finally starting up this month by vehicle engineering specialists Premcar of Melbourne, the company hopes that extended wait times will soon be a thing of the past.
Speaking to CarsGuide at the Y62 Patrol Warrior launch in Tasmania late last month, Nissan Australia managing director Adam Peterson revealed that there are now sufficient numbers of several models that were previously heavily supply-restricted, including the brand’s more-in-demand hybrids and workhorse ute.
“Inventory is greatly improving, more than it has been over the course of the last 12 months,” he said.
“(Patrol sales year-to-date) are just over 4200 units (to the end of August) … which is the best in 36 months, and it’s supply based… and we have much freer stock of Navara, of X-Trail of Qashqai than we have had over the past 24 months.”
Despite its advancing years – the current model that launched in Australia in early 2013 was already three years old by then – the Y62 Patrol has been in high demand since the COVID-19 pandemic started in 2020, with waiting lists stretching up to a year at one point. And this did not change when the much-newer Toyota LandCruiser 300 series landed in late 2021.
According to Paterson, while the normal Patrol might still take some months to arrive, the Warrior version – which is based on the base Ti specification and starts from $101,160 before on-road costs – is actually potentially only weeks away from reaching buyers.
“There is still a short wait list for Patrols,” he admitted. “You could perhaps walk into a dealer depending open where you are in the country and take delivery shortly.
“If you ordered one today, you can have one by Christmas.”
Paterson added that there is also only a short wait for the X-Trail e-Power hybrid model launched earlier this year.
“Depends how specific you are and where you are in the country, we do have ST-L e-Power stock today,” he said. “Not in every dealer, and depending on the colour and your location, you may be able to go in and buy one for delivery very, very shortly.
“We don’t have full coverage at every dealer across the country, but there are some in stock.”
But what if you have a specific specification and colour requirement?
“It’s tough to be specific,” Paterson said. “It depends on what colour, what grade and where you live… some dealers have some assigned that don’t have a customer, and in that instance, it might be a month or two, but if it’s a factory order, we’re maybe talking four to five months (wait).”
With September’s VFACTS sales figures announced since this interview was conducted, Patrol’s year-to-date figure is currently at 5582 units to the end of September. This represents a 24 per cent jump over the same period last year – an impressive result considering that the all-new Y63 Patrol is expected to be unveiled internationally within the next year or so.
That said, the LandCruiser 300 equivalent has just breached five figures at 10,816 sales, a 21.3 per cent hike over 2022 and by far the most popular model in VFACT’s SUV Upper Large under $120K category.
The only other class contender, the Land Rover Discovery, is up 226 per cent – though at a modest 326 registrations – but the related Defender is at nearly 3000 units; this is a 157 per cent improvement over the same period last year.
