The third-generation Honda HR-V range opens with the Vi X priced at $36,700 driveaway, and competes against more affordable options of the Toyota C-HR, Kia Seltos, Hyundai Kona and Mazda CX-30 families.

For the spend, buyers are compensated with 18-inch alloy wheels, engine start/stop technology, keyless entry, push-button start, rear privacy glass, and a 9.0-inch multimedia touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto support, digital radio and satellite navigation.

As for safety, the base HR-V comes fitted with forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, high beam assist, traffic sign recognition, lane departure warning, front and rear parking sensors, and a reversing camera.

Powering the HR-V Vi X is a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, punching out 89kW/145Nm to the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission. This is enough to return a fuel consumption figure of 5.8 litres per 100km, as per Honda's testing.
