The base Mazda CX-5 is available with two petrol engines, a 115kW/200Nm 2.0-litre or 140kW/252Nm 2.5-litre unit.

Pricing for the front-wheel-drive 2.0-litre Maxx starts at $30,980 before on-road costs for the six-speed manual, while a six-speed automatic transmission bumps up pricing to $32,980.

As for the automatic-only all-wheel-drive 2.5-litre version, the cost rises to $35,980.

Standard equipment on the CX-5 Maxx includes 17-inch steel wheels, LED headlights, six-speaker sound system, black cloth interior trim, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, and push-button start.

The 2020 CX-5 Maxx also scores a larger 8.0-inch multimedia screen, up from the old 7.0-inch unit, which features Bluetooth and USB input capabilities.

Safety wise, the base Maxx is fitted with autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, reversing camera and rear parking sensors, lane departure warning, lane-keep assist and adaptive cruise control.

As such, the CX-5 Maxx carries a full five-star Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) crash safety rating.
