GMSV Australia will add a third variant to its ‘remanufactured’ Chevrolet Silverado line-up in November, with the 4x4 full-size pick-up to become available in an even larger Heavy Duty LTZ Premium version.

The HD LTZ Premium is $30,000 dearer than the ‘regular’ LTZ Premium, at $144,990 plus on-road costs, which also puts plenty of space between it and the entry-level LT Trail Boss variant ($106,990).

Helping to distinguish the HD LTZ Premium is a 6.6-litre Duramax turbo-diesel V8 engine with 332kW of power and 1234Nm of torque. It’s mated to a new 10-speed Alison torque-converter automatic transmission.

For reference, the LT Trail Boss and regular LTZ Premium are instead motivated by a 313kW/624Nm 6.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol V8 engine.

Compared to the rest of the Ram 1500 rival’s range, the HD LTZ Premium only shares its roof panel, with the rest of its body unique due to its increased size. In particular, its tub measures 2104mm long and 1814mm wide, offering 1968L of volume and 12 tie-down points.

To further help the HD LTZ Premium stand out from the crowd, the Silverado’s available Appearance Package is fitted as standard, with it bundling in body-colour bumpers, gloss-black 20-inch alloy wheels and a Chevytec spray-on bed liner as well as black finishes for the skid plate, bonnet vent, tubular side steps, door handles and badging.

Better yet, the Z71 Off-Road Package is also in tow, with it introducing off-road suspension with Rancho twin-tube shocks, hill-descent control and specific branding, while the Advanced Towing Package adds a reversing camera with hitch guidance, an integrated trailer brake controller and power-extendable side mirrors.

Then there’s the Technology & Safety Pack 2, which includes low-speed autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian detection, high-beam assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and front and rear parking sensors.

Other standard equipment includes a power-operated tailgate, a sunroof, an 8.0-inch multifunction display, a 15.0-inch head-up display, a heated steering wheel, heated and cooled front seats, and dual-zone climate control.

According to GMSV Australia, the HD LTZ Premium’s full technical specifications will be released once its certification is finalised around October. In the meantime, registrations of interest are being taken on its website.

Justin’s dad chose to miss his birth because he wanted to watch Peter Brock hopefully win Bathurst, so it figures Justin grew up to have a car obsession, too – and don’t worry, his dad did turn up in time after some stern words from his mum. That said, despite loving cars and writing, Justin chose to pursue career paths that didn’t lend themselves to automotive journalism, before eventually ending up working as a computer technician. But that car itch just couldn’t be scratched by his chipped Volkswagen Golf R (Mk7), so he finally decided to give into the inevitable and study a Master of Journalism at the same time. And even with the long odds, Justin was lucky enough to land a full-time job as a motoring journalist soon after graduating and the rest, as they say, is history. These days, Justin happily finds himself working at CarsGuide during the biggest period of change yet for the automotive industry, which is perhaps the most exciting part of all. In case you’re wondering, Justin begrudgingly sold the Golf R (sans chip) and still has plans to buy his dream car, an E46 BMW M3 coupe (manual, of course), but he is in desperate need of a second car space – or maybe a third.
