Chery Australia has confirmed it’ll introduce plug-in hybrid (PHEV) technology this July with the updated Tiggo 7 and Tiggo 8 SUVs.
It appears these two updated Chery SUVs are the latest to drop the ‘Pro’ or ‘Pro Max’ from their model names, following the updated Tiggo 4.
These two new PHEV SUVs will share the same Chery Super Hybrid (CSH) system. It mates a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine with an electric motor and a 18.3kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery.
It’s worth noting the related Jaecoo J7 SHS is powered by the exact same set-up and is already sold in Australia.
Chery claims the Tiggo 7 and Tiggo 8 PHEVs will have an all-electric range of over 90km, according to an undisclosed efficiency cycle, and a total driving range over 1200km.
The battery pack can also be DC fast-charged from 30 to 80 per cent in 19 minutes.
As part of its release, Chery also detailed some imagery of the updated Tiggo 8 PHEV. It features a revised front fascia with a new grille insert and headlights.
It’s unclear if there will be any other changes as part of the update.
Beyond this, Chery plans to launch the larger Tiggo 9 in Australia in the second half of 2025 and it has already announced plans to introduce a hybrid powertrain to the Tiggo 4 later this year.
The Omoda 5 and Omoda E5 SUVs are also set to be renamed the C5 and E5, respectively, dropping the Omoda from their names, but will still be sold as a Chery in Australia.
This is despite the fact the standalone Omoda brand will launch locally in the second half of 2025 as part of a plan to align the Australian market with various other global markets.
Omoda models will be sold in Australia in Omoda Jaecoo showrooms, not Chery showrooms, and while there will be some crossover with Chery and Omoda Jaecoo showrooms, not all dealers will offer both.
