2022 Cupra Formentor price and features: Plug-in hybrid electric SUV headlines hi-po line- up for new Audi Q3, Volvo XC40, BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA and Lexus UX rival

The Formentor is the only one of Cupra Australia’s three launch models that’s not based on a Seat product.

Cupra Australia has detailed the standard specification and pricing of its most important launch model, the performance-focused Formentor small SUV, which is set to enter local showrooms in July with a four-strong line-up, including a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) option.

The Formentor’s entry-level version is the 140kW/320Nm V 4Drive, priced from $50,690 before on-road costs, and motivated by a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine, matching the mid-range 180kW/370Nm VZ and flagship 221kW/400Nm VZx 4Drive. A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT) is shared, too.

Meanwhile, the mid-range VZe PHEV combines a 110kW/250Nm 1.4-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine with an 85kW/300Nm front-mounted electric motor to deliver a combined 180kW/400Nm. It uses a six-speed DCT and is priced at $60,990.

As their names suggest, the V 4Drive and VZx 4Drive have Cupra’s 4Drive all-wheel-drive system, while the VZ and VZe send drive to their front wheels only, offering variety to would-be Audi Q3, Volvo XC40, BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA and Lexus UX buyers.

The V 4Drive comes with an extensive features list, including adaptive suspension, metallic paintwork, LED lights, rain-sensing wipers, black/silver 18-inch Sport alloy wheels (with a space-saver spare), power-folding side mirrors with heating and dark-chrome caps, puddle lights, keyless entry and rear privacy glass.

Inside, keyless start, a 12.0-inch touchscreen multimedia system, satellite navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a wireless smartphone charger, tri-zone climate control, a leather-trimmed steering wheel with heating, front sports seats, cloth upholstery and an auto-dimming rearview mirror feature.

Advanced driver-assist systems extend to autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-keep and steering assist, adaptive cruise control with stop and go functionality, high-beam assist, driver attention alert, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross- traffic alert, tyre pressure monitoring, park assist, a reversing camera and safe exit alert.

The $53,790 VZ upgrades to black/silver 19-inch Sport alloy wheels, while the VZe gets the same set but trades the otherwise space-saver spare for a tyre repair kit.

Elsewhere, the VZx 4Drive is priced at $61,490 and adds black/copper 19-inch Performance alloy wheels, a power tailgate, quad exhaust tailpipes, a 340W Beats sound system with nine speakers, a sports steering wheel, heated front seats (including driver power adjustment and memory functionality) and Petrol Blue leather upholstery.

Options for the V 4Drive, VZ and VZe include the Leather and Power Package, which bundles in a power tailgate, heated front seats (including driver power adjustment and memory functionality) and leather upholstery.

A panoramic sunroof is a standalone option for all variants, while the VZx can also level up with a Brembo brakes package, which substitutes in the tyre repair kit.

Justin’s dad chose to miss his birth because he wanted to watch Peter Brock hopefully win Bathurst, so it figures Justin grew up to have a car obsession, too – and don’t worry, his dad did turn up in time after some stern words from his mum. That said, despite loving cars and writing, Justin chose to pursue career paths that didn’t lend themselves to automotive journalism, before eventually ending up working as a computer technician. But that car itch just couldn’t be scratched by his chipped Volkswagen Golf R (Mk7), so he finally decided to give into the inevitable and study a Master of Journalism at the same time. And even with the long odds, Justin was lucky enough to land a full-time job as a motoring journalist soon after graduating and the rest, as they say, is history. These days, Justin happily finds himself working at CarsGuide during the biggest period of change yet for the automotive industry, which is perhaps the most exciting part of all. In case you’re wondering, Justin begrudgingly sold the Golf R (sans chip) and still has plans to buy his dream car, an E46 BMW M3 coupe (manual, of course), but he is in desperate need of a second car space – or maybe a third.
