Australia’s van segment finally has its first plug-in hybrid: the 2025 Ford Transit Custom PHEV.

Arriving locally in October alongside its new battery-electric sibling, the Ford E-Transit Custom, the two models will go head-to-head with the new Volkswagen Transporter, which will also be offered in the same powertrain guises.

Either model is distinguishable by its grille, with the PHEV boasting horizontal vents and the full-electric version opting for unique trapezoid and polygon detailing.

Prices start at $67,590 before on-road costs for the Transit Custom PHEV Trend LWB, rising to $69,990 before on-road costs for the Transit Custom PHEV Sport SWB.

Both PHEV models will be powered by a single 111kW/320Nm electric motor, mated to a 2.5-litre petrol engine that delivers a total output of 171kW to the front wheels through a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

Additionally, there is a liquid-cooled 11.8kWh battery. It delivers 54km of electric range, with total fuel consumption claimed at 1.7 litres per 100km under the WLTP cycle. A max AC charging rate of 3.5kW will charge the battery in four hours and 15 minutes.

There are three EV drive modes: Auto EV, EV Now and EV Later. Auto EV automatically deploys a combination of petrol and electric power; EV Now operates solely on the electric motor; and EV Later only utilises the petrol motor.

Stepping over to the E-Transit Custom, it starts at $77,590 before on-road costs for the Trend LWB, stepping up to $79,990 for the Sport SWB.

Both variants are powered by a 64kWh battery and a rear-mounted electric motor that delivers 160kW/415Nm to the rear wheels. Driving range is claimed at 301km on the Trend LWB or 307km on the Sport SWB (both under the WLTP cycle).

A max DC charging rate of 125kW should see the battery replenished from 15 to 80 per cent charge in 32 minutes.

As standard, both PHEV Transit Custom and E-Transit Custom models carry a 12.0-inch digital instrument cluster and a 13.0-inch multimedia display with wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and an in-built 5G modem.

There is also a comprehensive suite of advanced driver-assistance systems, including adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, blind spot monitoring, exit warning, lane keeping aid, exit warning, autonomous emergency braking, and rear brake assist.

Additionally, E-Transit variants benefit from Ford’s Secure Visibility Pack as standard, which integrates a built-in dash cam and a digital rear-view mirror that is fed by a camera on the rear load-door.

Standard body configurations allow for a single kerb-side load door, with the option of a rear liftgate door and dual sliding side load doors available for $700 and $1000, respectively.
