Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 2020: Fastest, most powerful 'Stang ever revealed

If you're ever thought the 5.0-litre V8 in Aussie-delivered Mustangs was a little underdone (though you probably haven't) then we've got some exciting news for you; Ford has just torn the covers off the fastest and most powerful 'Stang ever in Detroit.

The Ford Shelby GT500 makes use of a hand-built 5.2-litre V8, only with a whopping great supercharger attached (bigger than the one in the Dodge Hellcat, slightly smaller than the one used in the Dodge Demon), which ups the outputs to somewhere that is "more than" 522kW.

That power is fed through a new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission inspired by the brand's GT Supercar, with big Brembo brakes providing the stopping power and new electronic power steering and the brand's 'MagneRide' dampers helping the Mustang to go around corners.

All up it's enough, Ford says, to trim the sprint to 60mph (around 98km/h) to "mid-three seconds", and to knock off the quarter mile in less than 11 seconds.

It's also enough to gift the GT500 "the quickest street-legal acceleration and most high-performance technology to date ever offered in a Ford Mustang", not to mention the most powerful production Ford ever.

"With its supercar-level powertrain, the all-new Shelby GT500 takes the sixth-generation Mustang to a performance level once reserved only for exotics,” says Ford Performance global director, Hermann Salenbauch.

“As a Mustang, it has to be attainable and punch above its weight. To that end, we’ve set a new standard among American performance cars with our most powerful street-legal V8 engine to date, plus the quickest-shifting transmission ever in a Mustang for all-out precision and speed.”

Is this the super 'Stang you've been waiting for? Tell us in the comments below.

Andrew Chesterton should probably hate cars. From his hail-damaged Camira that looked like it had spent a hard life parked at the end of Tiger Woods' personal driving range, to the Nissan Pulsar Reebok that shook like it was possessed by a particularly mean-spirited demon every time he dared push past 40km/h, his personal car history isn't exactly littered with gold. But that seemingly endless procession of rust-savaged hate machines taught him something even more important; that cars are more than a collection of nuts, bolts and petrol. They're your ticket to freedom, a way to unlock incredible experiences, rolling invitations to incredible adventures. They have soul. And so, somehow, the car bug still bit. And it bit hard. When "Chesto" started his journalism career with News Ltd's Sunday and Daily Telegraph newspapers, he covered just about everything, from business to real estate, courts to crime, before settling into state political reporting at NSW Parliament House. But the automotive world's siren song soon sounded again, and he begged anyone who would listen for the opportunity to write about cars. Eventually they listened, and his career since has seen him filing car news, reviews and features for TopGear, Wheels, Motor and, of course, CarsGuide, as well as many, many others. More than a decade later, and the car bug is yet to relinquish its toothy grip. And if you ask Chesto, he thinks it never will.
