Toyota’s not finished with the GR Yaris, it seems, as reports from the brand’s home nation suggest a more powerful version of the hot hatch is on the horizon.

Not only does Japanese magazine Best Car report the imminent reveal of a GR Yaris with the same 221kW/370Nm power outputs as the GR Corolla, but it also says Toyota is nearing completion of its eight-speed automatic transmission to be paired with the engine.

The turbocharged 1.6-litre three-cylinder engine was previously paired only with a six-speed manual gearbox, making a still-impressive 200kW and 370Nm.

The GR Yaris with the extra 21KW is expected to debut later this year, with Best Car citing production of the car it calls the GR Yaris ‘Evolution II’ to begin in January 2024.

Aside from the addition of an optional eight-speed auto, which will be paired with paddle shifters, Best Car sources say exterior design changes are also on the cards, with an altered front bumper to add airflow cannards and narrow the main intake grille slightly.

At the rear, it’s possible a larger roof-mounted spoiler will feature on the GR Yaris, as shown in the renders published by the Japanese magazine.

Best Car sources say the GR Yaris will receive exterior design changes.

Inside, the interior elements from the GR Corolla will find their way to the smaller hatch, such as the physical dials in the GR Yaris being replaced by the large digital instrument cluster found in the Corolla.

Best Car also adds that Toyota’s engineers have adjusted the suspension and brakes on the hot hatch, as well as improving the body rigidity.

Currently, a GR Yaris in Australia starts from $51,390 before on-road costs, while the hotter Rallye edition starts from $56,390 - though both are available only in very limited quantities.
