Is this the ultimate glamping car? 2022 Hyundai Staria Lounge Camper is sleek alternative to the Mercedes-Benz Marco Polo and Volkswagen California

The electrically operated pop-up can house another bed.

Want to explore the great outdoors but not super interested in sleeping in a tent? Hyundai might have the answer.

Hyundai has revealed the Staria Lounge Camper for its South Korean home market. It is based on the opulent Staria Lounge, which is a high-end limousine-style version of the regular Staria people mover with captain’s chairs in the rear.

The Lounge Camper features an electrically operated pop-up roof tent, the top of which is made from the same material as the body to ensure a seamless design.

Once the roof is popped up, it can be used as a sleeping space for two adults, and it includes a mattress and lamp for extra comfort.

The second seating row can be electrically lowered flat to create another sleeping space. There’s also a retractable awning on the right side of the vehicle that features its own LED lighting.

Other handy features for keen campers include a 12.1-inch foldable controller and monitor in the rear of the vehicle, a 36-litre built-in fridge, a sink, a 40- and 70-litre water tank, a sliding rear table and external power supply.

You can even hook up a camping shower to the rear of the vehicle, and Hyundai is even offering a mosquito net for those that want to keep the tailgate open for extra breeze.

Engine options in Korea include the 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel and the 3.5-litre V6 petrol unit that are found in the Australian-market Staria.

Currently in Australia, camping fans have a couple of options when it comes to manufacturer-built camper vans, including the Mercedes-Benz Marco Polo Activity and the Volkswagen California. There are of course a number of outfits in Australia that convert vans to campers.

A Hyundai Motor Company Australia spokesperson said while the local arm was interested in the Staria Lounge Camper, it’s unlikely it will make it Down Under.

Managing Editor
Calling out the make and model of every single car he saw as a toddler might have challenged his parents’ patience, but it was clearly a starting point for Tim Nicholson’s journey into automotive journalism. Tim launched the program, Fender Bender, on community radio station JOY 94.9 during completion of his Master of Arts (Media and Communications). This led to an entry role at industry publication GoAuto, before eventually taking the role of Managing Editor. A stint as RACV’s Motoring Editor – including being an Australia’s Best Cars judge – provided a different perspective to automotive media, before leading him to CarsGuide where he started as a Contributing Journalist in September 2021, and transitioned to Senior Editor in April 2022, before becoming Managing Editor in December 2022.
