Leaked! 2025 BMW iX3 EV set to raise electric car standards against Tesla Model Y, Mercedes EQC, Polestar 3, Audi Q6 e-tron and Genesis GV60

BMW deliberately leaked blurry images of the next-gen iX3 in Munich to underscore its intention to dominate luxury EV SUVs.

BMW has teased a few blurry images of what may be its most important electric vehicle (EV) launch this decade.

Codenamed NA5 and set to drop sometime in 2025 as the second-generation iX3, the electric mid-sized SUV is set to be the brand's volume-selling EV, leading it into the second half of this decade against key rivals like the Tesla Model Y, Mercedes-Benz EQC II, Polestar 3, Audi Q6 e-tron and Genesis GV60.

Making an unexpected appearance during a video presentation of the Neue Klasse Vision Concept sedan at BMW's media and stakeholder event in Munich earlier this month, the images reveal a larger, roomier and sleeker SUV, boasting cleaner lines than the current model.

BMW confirmed that the vehicle in the video will be based on the coming all-new component set as its German concept-car heartstopper, which is shaping up to be a real gamechanger thanks to the vaunted sixth-generation 'eDrive' system.

Amongst other innovations, this 800-volt architecture promises range rises of up to 30 per cent, charging speeds will jump 30 per cent and overall efficiency will improve 25 per cent compared to today's equivalent EVs from the brand.

These are huge gains, and it makes for some worrying figures for rival carmakers.

BMW has teased a few blurry images of what may be its most important electric vehicle (EV) launch this decade.

For example, against today's iX3 – unveiled in 2020 and built on a modified internal combustion engine platform based on the existing 3 Series – range could surge from 460km to 600km, the industry-standard 10-to-80 per cent charge time would tumble from over 70 to under 50 minutes using a modest 50kW DC plug, and energy consumption could fall from 18.5kWh/100km to under 14kWh/100km.

BMW also confirmed that its new mid-sized SUV EV will be joined by five other models within 24 months of launch, also based on the new eDrive '6' architecture, though what these will be is still pure speculation.

"The Neue Klasse is not just one car, it is a completely new generation of cars," according to BMW CEO, Oliver Zipse. "We plan to have six models on the road in 24 months between 2025 and 2027."

Widespread speculation suggests that these will include a variation of the next 3 Series that the Neue Klasse Vision Concept is said to foreshadow, possibly wearing a resurrected i3 badge. This is expected to take direct aim at the Tesla Model 3.

There is also talk of i4 liftback/coupe/convertible offshoots, as well as an iX4 coupe SUV.

To help BMW achieve the promised range, charging and efficiency gains in its next-gen wave of EVs, all will adopt novel cylindrical battery cell tech, along with lighter materials, better aerodynamics and far-more sustainable component and manufacturing properties.

The Bavarian brand is also touting its 'Panoramic Vision' dash, which projects customisable vehicle operation info across the lower width of the windscreen in conjunction with a head-up display and central screen. Its goal is to minimise driver eye movement and distraction. To that end, content can be moved or called upon using hand gestures as well as voice control.

While the current iX3 is made in China and offered in a single single-motor/rear-drive configuration, the 2025 replacement is said to expand production to Hungary, Germany and Mexico, to better help meet global demand.

It will also adopt twin-motor/all-wheel drive options, and even quad-motor high-performance flagship versions. Power outputs are thus rumoured to vary from around 200kW to over 1000kW. No doubt the latter will be wearing 'M' badges.

BMW, clearly, is taking Tesla on with a powerful, efficient and attractive EV aimed at the heart of market.

Stay tuned, as we'll keep you posted as more information becomes available.
