Move over, Passat! 2024 Volkswagen ID.7 sedan revealed as electric car flagship, but will it come to Australia?

The Volkswagen ID.7 is here to take the mantle as the brand’s large sedan and push into the EV age.

While Volkswagen is spruiking the incoming ID.7 electric sedan as being ready for a “simultaneous world premiere” for China, Europe and North America, there’s a slight snag in the plan - China has already spilled the beans.

As is becoming increasingly common, the Chinese Ministry of Information and Technology (MIIT) has published images and specifications of the electric sedan for the Chinese market ahead of its official reveal later this week.

However, the version set to launch in China is a product of a collaboration between Volkswagen and Chinese state-owned brand FAW (First Automobile Works) and could have slight differences between models built of markets like the US and the EU.

Published by Car News China, the details of the ID.7’s Chinese version show a 150kW single-motor version with a 77kWh battery allowing a range of 700km, presumably under the CLTC testing procedure as used in China.

Internationally, Volkswagen has only revealed images of the ID.7 with colourful camouflage and has published almost no details about specification.

Volkswagen has also specifically flagged the ID.7’s reveal as taking place for “Europe, China and North America” with no mention of Australia.

It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Volkswagen Australia give the ID.7 a miss.

“Parallel to our electric offensive in Europe, we are also focusing on Asia and North America. The ID.7 is an extremely important model for Volkswagen in China, Canada and the USA,” said Volkswagen brand Member of the Board for Sales and Marketing Imelda Labbé.

CarsGuide has contacted Volkswagen Australia for comment on the ID.7 and its likeliness for the local market, but keep in mind the model’s position as a premium flagship sedan - something more popular in those markets than here.

It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Volkswagen Australia give the electric sedan a miss as the brand’s local sales figures show a very strong bent towards the SUV market, with fewer than 500 sedans or liftbacks sold this year across the Arteon and Passat models out of a total 8948 new vehicles sales up to the end of March.
