Pony up! 2023 Ford Mustang gets more power from every engine with figures confirmed

The Mustang Dark Horse is the headliner, rocking a 373kW V8.

Ford has finally confirmed the power outputs for its three variants of the 2023 Mustang, with the headline Dark Horse variant approaching Mustang GT350 power levels.

In a US press release, Ford says the power levels are up on every Mustang variant’s drivetrain, meaning even the four-cylinder turbocharged EcoBoost engine has had some work done.

The 2023 Ford Mustang now makes, in its most traditional GT specification, 362kW and 563Nm from its 5.0-litre Coyote V8.

In Australia, the last-gen Mustang GT was good for 339kW and 556Nm, slightly down from the US outputs.

That means we can expect to see the 2023 model cop a very slight power drop for Australia, as our fuel quality and environmental factors differ from overseas.

The GT is no longer the top dog Mustang, however, with Ford’s engineers having wrung some more power out of the gutsy Coyote in the Dark Horse version, which makes 373kW and 567Nm.

Coyote engine program supervisor Suzanne Robinson says the addition of dual throttle bodies is key to extracting the extra power, as well as responsiveness, from the Coyote V8.

“Every time someone gets behind the wheel of a Mustang, we know they want to feel that strong connection to their vehicle – and we’re just as invested in creating that bond,” said Ms Robinson.

“With the increased responsiveness you get from the new dual throttle bodies, we’re wringing every ounce of performance we can out of our engine so Mustang enthusiasts can have that experience.”

Finally, at the other end of the scale, the turbocharged 2.3-litre four-cylinder-powered Mustang EcoBoost (which was called 2.3L High Performance here most recently) gets a bump up to 235kW and 475Nm.

A six-speed manual and 10-speed automatic transmission are the two options available for all variants.

Aside from the engine’s boosted outputs, the interior has also had a refresh, with an updated multimedia system and a slightly more premium feel - Ford hopes - which is likely to have the Mustang land here in late 2023 with a higher price tag than we’ve seen previously.
