Toyota's 86 hits double figures! A decade in-market for Subaru BRZ twin and Mazda MX-5 competitor marked with ultra-exclusive GR86 10th Anniversary Edition

The 10th birthday of the Toyota 86 will be celebrated with a special-edition model.

On arrival in 2012, Toyota's 86 brought traditional sports car performance to the masses, with a sleek '2+2' coupe design, a rear-wheel drive layout, and an affordable price.

It marked the emergence of the 'new Toyota', the previously conservative carmaker breaking the shackles thanks to company President Akio Toyoda's focus on the development of more exciting machinery.

Now, to mark 10 years in the Australian market, and close to 22,000 examples sold, Toyota Australia has released details of a limited-volume GR86 10th Anniversary Edition.

Only 86 examples of this special coupe will be produced, with on-sale timing set for soon after the new second-generation model arrives in September this year.

Like the first-generation car, the new 86 is the product of a model-share collaboration with Subaru, which launched its new, second-gen BRZ version here way back in January.

The 10th anniversary GR86 will be finished in orange, with all cars featuring a two-tone black and orange interior treatment and the upper parts of the driver and passenger door trims embossed with 10th Anniversary embroidery.

Members of Toyota Australia's Gazoo Racing Club (an owners club offering member-only drive experiences and content) get first crack at the car via priority ordering access.

Like the BRZ, the new-generation GR86 will be powered by a 174kW/250Nm 2.4-litre naturally aspirated engine driving the rear wheels, and will feature a revised suspension tune and a new, more sophisticated dash design.

Details on price and full specification will be released closer to the new GR86's local launch late in the third quarter.
