Volkswagen Scirocco R Wolfsburg Edition 2016 | new car sales price

2016 Volkswagen Scirocco R Wolfsburg Edition.

VW to farewell third-generation Scirocco R with limited-build Wolfsburg Edition.

The Scirocco gets its name from a hot dusty wind that blows from Africa across southern Europe. There's a good chance it doesn't touch Wolfsburg in northern Germany though, even if it existed in particularly hot R form. This hasn't stopped Volkswagen from naming its ultimate, in both senses of the word, Scirocco after its Wolfsburg global headquarters.

Given the slow sales of the updated model since it arrived in early 2015 (367 last year and 204 so far in 2016), VW Australia has chosen to end its local presence with the highest-spec version yet.

The Scirocco R Wolfsburg Edition will be limited to just 150 numbered examples when it arrives in November, split roughly 4:1 between six-speed DSG auto and six-speed manual transmissions.

It will be no faster than the existing version, with the same 188kW/330Nm turbo 2.0-litre from the Mk6 Golf R, but will be identified from the outside by black 19-inch Lugarno alloy wheels and corresponding door mirrors. Colour options will be limited to Oryx White Pearl or Rising Blue.

The inside scores special, heavily bolstered Alcantara and leather bucket seats, and the ticket to ultimate Scirocco R exclusivity will cost you $3500 beyond the regular version to total $49,490 for the manual and $51,990 for the auto.

Will this Scirocco go like the wind? Tell us what you think in the comments below.

Back when all cars burned fuel and couldn't drive themselves, Mal was curing boredom by scanning every car his parents' VB Commodore drove past. His childhood appreciation for the car world exploded during a three-year stint in the US, and serious questions were asked when he spent a good chunk of his uni career perfecting lap times at Wakefield Park. Mal got his big break scooping the VE II Commodore, before a stint at Overlander magazine and kicking off his online career with The Motor Report in its heyday. These days he's exactly the same height as Michael Schumacher and uses his powers for good at the helm of CarsGuide's editorial team. Mal proudly shuns brand allegiance and counts three young kids, an EH Holden, NA MX-5, KE20 Corolla, W116 Mercedes-Benz and the world's most versatile Toyota Echo among his personal stable. He also craves a Subaru Vortex, so get in touch if you know where to find one.
