The $210,000 A8 L 55 TFSI represents the top tier of the new fourth-generation A8 line-up. The long-wheelbase petrol 55 TFSI sits $3000 above the diesel 55 TDI version, and a full $15,000 over the short wheelbase version.

The 55 TFSI comes with the same level of standard trim as the 50 TDI, but like most models at this end of the price scale, it’s easier to describe what equipment costs more rather than what comes standard. Like all Audis, there’s a bunch of options available.

Aside from a handful of wheel choices, Alcantara headlining is available for $3600, all-wheel steering adds $4500, night vision will cost you $5200, an upgraded 23-speaker Bang & Olufsen 3D sound system will set you back $12,100, and laser headlights are available for an extra $13,200.

Five option packs start at $6690 for the 'Entertainment package' which brings multimedia to the rear seats, full leather can be had for $9950 as can the 'Sport styling package', a bunch of other niceties are added with the $11,000 'Premium plus package', and if you’ve already selected the rear seat entertainment system, you can also choose the $18,500 'Executive package' which brings individual reclining back seats, folding tables, rear passenger-side footrest and foot massage function among a few other treats.

The A8 L 55 TFSI comes with a 3.0-litre turbo V6 petrol engine which produces 250kW/550Nm, and sends power to all four wheels with Audi’s Quattro system via an eight-speed (torque converter) auto. The official combined fuel consumption figure is an impressive 8.3L/100km.

Back when all cars burned fuel and couldn't drive themselves, Mal was curing boredom by scanning every car his parents' VB Commodore drove past. His childhood appreciation for the car world exploded during a three-year stint in the US, and serious questions were asked when he spent a good chunk of his uni career perfecting lap times at Wakefield Park. Mal got his big break scooping the VE II Commodore, before a stint at Overlander magazine and kicking off his online career with The Motor Report in its heyday. These days he's exactly the same height as Michael Schumacher and uses his powers for good at the helm of CarsGuide's editorial team. Mal proudly shuns brand allegiance and counts three young kids, an EH Holden, NA MX-5, KE20 Corolla, W116 Mercedes-Benz and the world's most versatile Toyota Echo among his personal stable. He also craves a Subaru Vortex, so get in touch if you know where to find one.
