Chris Riley road tests and reviews the Peugeot 3008 with specs, fuel consumption and verdict.
Value
There's just the one model with petrol and diesel engine options (a new one is due next year). Prices start at $35,490 for petrol and $38,990 for the diesel, both plus onroads.
Leather trim is part of a $3500 option pack. It’s pretty well equipped with LED lights, 17-inch alloys, electric park brake, auto lights and wipers, six-speaker Arkamys digital audio and seven-inch screen with satnav.
The biggish boot has a clever, tiered storage arrangement.
Comfort
The design wasn’t terribly well received on debut eight years ago. Think tall and narrow with plenty of headroom. The cabin feels big, bright and airy, with a large steeply raked windscreen and huge fixed sunroof.
Accommodation in the front is good, with comfortable seats, but rear legroom is limited. The biggish boot has a clever, tiered storage arrangement, with access via a split tailgate. Petrol versions get a full-size spare.
Safety
Gets a full five stars for safety, scoring 35.07/37. Comes with six airbags and all the basics, including rear parking sensors and rear-view camera, but lacks the latest safety aids such as blind spot alert or auto emergency braking.
Driving
The petrol engine is quicker out of the blocks but purists will head straight for the torquey diesel, which provides strong mid-range performance.
Transmission is a six-speed auto but it doesn’t have paddle-shifters. The steering is fine but the ride could be more compliant. Satnav screen is set way back and controlled from the dash but it’s nowhere near as intuitive as a touchscreen — pairing a mobile phone likewise could be simpler.
On test, we logged 7.2L/100km after 450km. Warranty is three years/ 100,000km, service interval is 12 months or 15,000km and capped servicing comes to $1855 over three years.

Verdict
It’s an award winner but the design is dated. The 3008 is quite a niche vehicle and as with many European cars the purchasing decision can be emotional rather than dictated by dollars. You can get more for less elsewhere.
