This is where the Forester gets a bit of a performance boost. While engine size drops back to 2.0-litres, power is way up to 177kW at 5600rpm and 350Nm between 2400 and 3600rpm. The torque figure is identical to the diesel's but fuel consumption is higher at a claimed 8.5L/100km. The turbo petrol also insists on 95 RON fuel.

Starting at $41,240, the XT arrives on your drive with 18-inch alloy wheels, a six-speaker stereo, the same 7.0-inch Starlink screen with USB and Bluetooth (but loses sat nav), electric driver's seat, cloth trim, unpowered tailgate and full-size spare.

The XT also drops EyeSight and Vision Assist, but maintains its five-star ANCAP rating with seven airbags, ABS, stability and traction controls, three top-tether anchor points and two ISOFIX points.

Peter grew up in a house in Western Sydney where automotive passion extended to white Sigmas and Magnas. At school he discovered "those" magazines that weren't to be found in the house. Magazines that offered him the chance to sit in the driver's seat of cars he’d never even heard of let alone seen. His path to rebellion was set - he would love cars, know cars and want to write about cars, much to his family’s disgust. They wanted him to be a teacher. He bought a series of terrible cars and lusted after Ford Escort Cosworths, the Alfa Romeo 164 Q and occasionally kicked himself for selling his 1977 Alfa GTV. From 1.0-litre three cylinders to roaring V12s, Peter has driven them all and can't wait to tell you all about it.
