While it may wear an HSV badge, this Euro-built Opel Astra didn’t have much at all to do with the famed Australian tuning house.

It wore HSV badges on the outside but that’s about it. Still, the Germans did a pretty bang-up job on the powertrain with 177kW and 320Nm from a 2.0-litre turbo being more than enough to see this Volkswagen Golf GTI and Ford Focus XR5 rival torque steer down the drag strip.

The pumped up VXR only survived three years (2006-2009) on sale before it was let go from the range.

The line-up currently starts at $5,500 for the VXR Nurburgring Edition and ranges through to $8,250 for the range-topping VXR (base).
