The tiny, two-seat, two-door, Lotus Elise sports car has been in continuous production since 1997, but has managed to remain fresh and relevant, despite its relative obscurity.
The Elise features a fibreglass body bolted on top of an extruded aluminium chassis, with a four-cylinder engine mounted behind the passenger compartment. Early cars used an MG-Rover-sourced four-cylinder engine, while cars from 2007 onwards used Toyota four-cylinder petrol engines, in various guises ranging from the $91,300 Elise Sport 240 Final Edition up to the $117,810 Elise CUP 250 Final Edition.
Light weight and minimal driver aids distinguish the Elise from its competition, and it's a philosophy that the tiny English company has stuck with to this day.
You must try it on for size. Make sure the seat moves back far enough so your legs are not jammed under the steering wheel and you're comfortable. You should also have good headroom so you're not ducking down to see through the windshield. And make sure you can get out quickly in an emergency.
