2022 Genesis G80 pricing and features: BMW 5 Series-rivalling luxury sedan adds Sport Line and extra gear but cops price increase

The Sport Line adds some visual tweaks the big, bold Genesis G80 sedan.

Genesis has injected some sporting flavour to its flagship sedan, the G80, while making tweaks across the range for 2022.

The large sedan gains, as an option, the previously revealed Sport Line Package that adds more aggressive and sporty styling flourishes.

G80 pricing has also increased slightly, with the 2.5T up by $1100 to $86,000 and the 3.5T up by $2100 to $102,000, before on-road costs. Genesis dropped the diesel version of the G80 late last year.

Genesis has added some new standard features to the 2022 G80 range, including intelligent speed limit assist, which includes traffic sign recognition, and a pair of USB ports in the rear, while the 2.5T also gains a new 19-inch alloy wheel design.

Buyers can option the Sport Line on both G80 variants – the rear-wheel drive 2.5-litre 2.5T and the all-wheel drive 3.5T – for $6000 on top of the base price.

The Sport Line visual changes include a unique front bumper with larger lower air intakes, dark chrome grille and side skirt highlights, a tweaked rear bumper with side air vents, dual exhausts, 20-inch five-spoke alloy wheels and Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres, black front brake callipers, and a selection of Sport Line exclusive exterior colours.

Inside it gets a three-spoke sports steering wheel, quilted sports seats, alloy pedals and carbon trim, and it is fitted with electronic control suspension.

Additionally, the G80 3.5T Sport Line features rear-wheel steering, a Sport+ drive mode, launch control and Active Road Noise Control which uses an acceleration sensor to detect road vibrations that are then hushed via a noise-cancelling inverted sound wave.

Some of the equipment that’s already standard across the G80 range includes a lengthy list of driver assist safety features, panoramic sunroof, dual-zone climate control, quilted leather seats, 12-way power adjustable front seats, power opening boot, wireless phone charging, a 14.5-inch multimedia system and a 21-speaker audio system.

Both model grades can also be optioned with the Luxury Package for an extra $13,000 and that adds more driver assistance features, remote smart parking, and more goodies for the rear seat passengers like heated and ventilated rear seats, two 9.2-inch rear-seat entertainment screens and power rear outboard seat adjustment.

New to the Luxury Package is a rear wireless phone charger and front ‘ergo motion’ seats that Genesis says “treat front occupants to a relaxing, comfortable ride while also offering exemplary posture support”.

There are no changes to the mechanics, with the 2.5T continuing to use the 224kW/422Nm 2.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine driving the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The 3.5T is powered by a 279kW/530Nm twin-turbocharged petrol V6 matched with an eight-speed auto driving all four wheels.

Rivals for the G80 include other large premium sedans like the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series, Jaguar XF, Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Maserati Ghibli.

The 2.5T is available now and the 3.5T will roll into Genesis stores in March. They will be followed by the fully electric version of the G80 in the second quarter.

Calling out the make and model of every single car he saw as a toddler might have challenged his parents’ patience, but it was clearly a starting point for Tim Nicholson’s journey into automotive journalism. Tim launched the program, Fender Bender, on community radio station JOY 94.9 during completion of his Master of Arts (Media and Communications). This led to an entry role at industry publication GoAuto, before eventually taking the role of Managing Editor. A stint as RACV’s Motoring Editor – including being an Australia’s Best Cars judge – provided a different perspective to automotive media, before leading him to CarsGuide where he started as a Contributing Journalist in September 2021, and transitioned to Senior Editor in April 2022, before becoming Managing Editor in December 2022.
