Bad news for Australian driver's licences - the very fast 300 horsepower 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan R is back on sale locally with plenty of stock ready to race

The halt on orders for the Volkswagen Tiguan R has been called off with new stock ready to buy

It's rare these days to be able to report that there's fresh supply, and in very healthy numbers, for a new model. In this case it's the Volkswagen Tiguan R high-performance SUV.

Plus, if you happen to already have an order in for a Tiguan R, then the wait is nearly over. It's very likely to be delivered any time now.

Speaking at the launch of the new T-Roc and Tiguan R Grid Editions Volkswagen Australia's Product and PR Communications Manager, Daniel DeGasperi said there's been a reversal of fortunes for the go-fast mid-sized SUV after the carmaker was forced to halt orders.

"We briefly paused Tiguan R orders due to demand overwhelming supply, " he said.

"But, we've had confirmation that Volkswagen's R division is sending us a lot more Tiguan Rs.

"I spoke to our sales and delivery division a few days ago and their words were ‘we're smashing through Tiguan orders at a huge rate to the point where in about a month's time, we will have caught up with all existing Tiguan R orders'.

"So we're also pleased to say that the Tiguan R will be available to order, effective immediately. And from about Q2 we should start to see the real upswing in supply.

"To give you an idea of 2023 versus 2022. For Tiguan R, we do anticipate about 10 times more stock for 2023 than we saw for 2022," he said.

That's great news for Aussies who are well known for choosing the top-of-the-range and high-performance versions of nearly every and any model on the market.

Mr DeGasperi added, "The Volkswagen R division actually called Australia out as one of the top markets for Tiguan R. And outright in terms of headline numbers, that is our most in-demand model."

Launched in 2022 the Tiguan R sits at the top of the Tiguan line-up with a list price of $70,490.

It's also the most powerful in the range with its 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine making a substantial 235kW and 400Nm, which finds its way to all four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

A 0-100km/h time of 5.1 seconds makes it one of the most potent mid-sized SUVs on the market for the money.

If you are thinking of bringing home a Tiguan R to your driveway Volkswagen advises that you check with your local dealers, because while the carmaker is in a much stronger place to fulfil orders, availability will vary depending on your location.
