Benz belter: Wicked 2024 Mercedes-AMG GT63 S E Performance hybrid car pricing and features confirmed for Australia

The AMG GT63 S E Performance claims the title of most powerful Benz to go on sale in Oz.

Mercedes calls it “the next step into Mercedes-AMG’s electrified future”, but it’s more like a fly-kick - the AMG GT63 S E Performance is now available to order in Australia as the most powerful model from the brand to set rubber on Aussie soil.

Of course, a hybrid super sedan doesn’t come cheap - pricing for the AMG GT63 S E starts from $399,900 before on-roads, but there’s plenty of car to come with the hefty price tag.

Unlike some of the incoming E Performance hybrid models from AMG for example, the GT63 retains the V8 engine that its current generation has been using since its inception - no four-cylinder downsizing here, yet.

That’s a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 for those playing at home, which is assisted by a permanently excited synchronous electric motor, allowing for a total system output of 620kW and 1400Nm.

The AMG GT four-door is already no small thing, but adding a hybrid system will of course make it heavier - the battery alone weighs 89kg - so it’s rather impressive that AMG claims a 0-100km/h sprint in just 2.9 seconds.

If going fast isn’t the only desire for owners, the GT63 S E’s hybrid system with a 6.1kWh battery allows for an electric-only driving range of 12 kilometres, with an output of 70kW and peak output of 150kW for 10 seconds.

Pricing for the AMG GT63 S E starts from 9,900 before on-roads.

The electric motor is mounted to the rear axle, allowing for instant torque applied to the rear wheels for weight distribution reasons, though drive can be transferred to the front wheels for more traction.

It’s not all about the drivetrain, even though with this car it mostly is, because inside there are luxe touches like heated and cooled front seats with heated armrests in Nappa leather upholstery, heated rear seats, a 14-speaker Burmester surround sound system, and power-closing doors.

AMG’s Ride Control+ suspension underneath consists of multi-chamber air suspension and automatic level control, while AMG rear-axle steering allows for tighter turning circles and better high-speed stability.

The AMG GT63 S E Performance is now available to order.
